Geoffrey Chaucers character The Wife of Bath - Free Essay Example
The Medieval Period was a strange period to live in, especially with the role of women and marriage in the society. The society, since it was based off of the Christian-Catholic church, had a highly patriarchal culture, leaving women powerless and helpless. Most of womens actions were dictated by male superiors, especially religious ministers and leaders. In regards with marriage during the medieval period, one of the major practices was to understand the feelings of each other and then couples can get married already. Most marriages back in the days were not administered by any minister or a representative, and it was just a mere agreement of two or four minds. Also according to an article from the The Medieval Times, the typical age for marriages back in the medieval era was 12 years old for girls, and 14 years old for boys. Marriages were fixed by parents of both sides and it was mostly based off of a monetary value. Since these actions bothered the clergy, theologians made marriage a holy sacrament for couples union with each other, Christ, and the church. Chaucer wanted to represent women during the Medieval period while portraying the role of the church in controlling the society affecting women. Geoffrey Chaucers character : The Wife of Bath, suggests that women back in the medieval period craved for power over men and control over the society. The Wife of Bath was used as a representation on how women back in the medieval era needed power through marriage with men. Marriage became the way on how women could get power, because marriage was a symbol of authority over one another. The Wife really wanted power so she became against the authorities of the church and forms her arguments through her experience with 5 husbands. With the tale, the woman asked: what do women most desire? Men had a hard time answering the question since they dont really study womens behavior that time. The Wife of Bath was ahead of time for with her intellectual abilities of not using biblical scriptures to form good arguments about womens role in the society, became an empowering movement for women. For example :You spoke of gentle birth, such as descends from ancient wealth and worth. If thats the claim you make for gentlemen. Such arrogance is hardly worth a hen. shows the idea of how women wanted to free their speech in the society. Now, the answer to the question: What do women most desire? is, according to a woman: A woman wants the self-same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her. In a deeper context, women, in general and not just in marriage, wanted power over the patriarchal society. The wife was actually more than a feminist. Feminism is defined as the equality of all sexes. However, with the text, women wanted more power than men, resulting to reversed inequality. It shows that the text at the end of the tale when the wife tells her fifth husband: kiss meand you shall find me bothFair and faithful as a wife shows that she has now control over her husband, and may result to women having more power than men in the society. The Wife embodies the idea of feminism in a way where women have more opportunities and power compared to before. However, the tale suggests that too much power for women will result to a reversed inequality, that may result into a women- controlled society. Today, feminism is about equality of opportunities, happiness, and roles of everybody regardless of gender. The cravings of women for power is slowly getting satisfied by society through equality, and it is continuously changing womens ability to do things. According to Uzor Darlington Ikes The Importance of Feminism for men and Women: the importance of feminism for men relies on a simple fact and that is that the concept of inequality is not endangering, and never has been. The Christian Church played a big role on how gender divided society, and it became a concept stuck in the society. However, society have come a long way in changing the worlds perspective about gender, which is a good stuff. Good in a way that people can see everybody now and not consider gender as a basis for a humans role. It is also good that people see gender as a way to express themselves and their role in the society. However, society should always remember that too much good stuff is bad stuff.

The Experimental Side Of Documentary Practice - 1350 Words
Introduction This project aims to further develop the experimental side of documentary practice, with special focus on ethnography. It will take the form of an experimental documentary juxtaposing enactments of the past with depictions of the present, through a case study focusing on North-Eastern Romanian villages, engaging villagers into re-enactments of traditional life from the past as method of documenting their self reflection on the transition to the present. The setting of the re-enactments is based on the Romanian ballad The Little Ewe and more specifically on the journey described in the Mihail Sadoveanu novel inspired by it, The Hatchet (1930). These two texts are widely known in Romania having become compulsory reading material in schools as one of the four fundamental myths of Romanians and a monographic representation of the Romanian village and its customs respectively. The main themes of the two stories are transhumance and death, both highlighting the traditions and the way of life of shepherding communities. Furthering the reasons for this choice, these texts have become engrained into the collective consciousness of Romanian people as to become an unconscious memory. Its relevance within ethnographic practice is given by the documentation of the transition process from traditional to modernity within the Romanian village, as well as its universal exploration of humans facing change and their ways to adapt to it. Due to Marie Antoinette gambling, buying expensive clothes, hats and jewelry that seemed extravagant and exaggerating to the citizens, the queen was blamed for the financial crisis France was going through. The queen ignored the countrys financial crisis. She refused to make concessions to the hungry masses that stormed the palace of Versailles and sent troops against them. Poor harvest and lack of food due to the high cost was believed to be a result of the extravagant lifestyle of the queen. On July 14, 1789, approximately nine hundred men French workers and peasants stormed the Bastille Prison beginning the French Revolution. On October 6, a crowd gathered outside the Palace at Versailles and demanded that the King and Queen be brought to Paris. Marie Antoinette sought to look for help in order to save the French monarchy. The royal family attempted to escape France in June 1791, but they were captured and returned to Paris. Michael Jordan vs Wikipedia free essay sample
Michael Jordan VS Wikipedia Over the past twelve years there has been a great controversy on whether or not the website Wikipedia is reliable enough to get sources that are accurate enough to believe. Many seem quick to judge whether or not if Wikipedia is a credible source and cites the necessary about to make it a reliable source to get information from. In the article ââ¬Å"Wikipediaâ⬠(2013), unknown authors inform the general public about the Wikipedia website. The authors provide evidence on who updates their information, site their sources and include references. The purpose of Wikipedia is to persuade users to use the website. Wikipedia targets the general public to use their website for a non-profit organization. Wikipedia is a reliable source because it cites its sources and gives knowledgeable facts. On the website Wikipedia, under the source entry ââ¬Å"Wikipediaâ⬠goes into detail about all the attributes and information about Wikipedia and how it came about and why it is a reliable site to get information from. Wikipedia has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet. Wikipedia is a reliable source because of its vandalism program in which it is able to detect and remove vandalism within a few minutes. Also with Wikipedia being a free online encyclopedia it allows for open structure, which lets the public write and change anything about any topic. On the Wikipedia website under the topic ââ¬Å"Wikipediaâ⬠, found that ââ¬Å"a non-scientific report in the journal Nature in 2005 suggested that for some scientific articles Wikipedia came close to the level of accuracy of Encyclopedia Britannicaâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (preface). With that being said, it justifies that Wikipediaââ¬â¢s reliability is just as effective as that of a profitable encyclopedia that is written by experts. Many feel as if Wikipedia isnââ¬â¢t a reliable enough sources because it contains articles written based on authors interpretations of research that other have done. Schools sometimes do not allow their student to find research or facts on Wikipedia because they second-guess Wikipediaââ¬â¢s creditability as a whole. Some questions that might come into play is, why wouldnââ¬â¢t you cite the original source, and what relevance does someone elseà interpretation have? Even though anyone can edit Wikipedia, it is still reviewed and their vandalism program and bots that search for errors remove inaccurate information quickly. For the most part, you have extremely small chances of finding unreliable and inaccurate information on Wikipedia. Wikipedia also gives blue text indicates links to other Wikipedia entries or to sources for the entry to help the reader go more into depth about their topic. Encyclopedias are mainly written for people who do not know a great deal about a specific subject and would like to find out more. With Wikipedia being that online non profitable encyclopedia it allows people to search any subject and conveys enough information to a reader who knows little or nothing about the subject. For example on the Wikipedia website I searched for credible information about ââ¬Å"Michael Jordanâ⬠. Wikipedia also has through out the text blue highlighted text that can lead the reader to links to other Wikipedia entries or sources that relate to the subject of choice. Wikipedia has lead me to believe that it is a very reliable source because of its citing and credible facts I received about Michael Jordanââ¬â¢s career. Wikipedia lead me to new facts about Michael Jordanââ¬â¢s career such as, ââ¬Å"During the Bulls playoff run in 1993, controversy arose when Jordan was seen gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the night before a game against the Knicks. In that same year, he admitted to having to cover $57,000 in gambling lossesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (14). With Wikipedia bring up this problem about Michael Jordanââ¬â¢s life and citing where it came from and giving me alternate links that lead me more into depth with this problem proves that Wikipedia is reliable. Some come to the conclusion that Wikipedia has a weakness and is not a reliable source because it is an open source website which means anyone can edit it. Its weakness is what makes it so great. Anyone can edit it. This brings a huge variety of information as well as great depth and large bibliographies. Wikipedia also goes above and beyond to correct and edit sources have citations and staff are always checking edits. In Wikipediaââ¬â¢s disclaimer that may it apparent that Wikipedia may be inaccurate and misleading and it is ultimately they users decision and to use their judgment call. But how is some random website that is Googled up more reliable then Wikipedia? Us Involvement In World War Two Essays - , Term Papers
Us Involvement In World War Two America's involvement in World War Two When war broke out , there was no way the world could possibly know the severity of this guerre. Fortunately one country saw and understood that Germany and its allies would have to be stopped. America's Involvement in World War two not only contributed in the eventual downfall of the insane Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich, but also came at the precise time and moment. Had the united states entered the war any earlier the consequences might have been worse. Over the years it has been an often heated and debated issue on whether the united states could have entered the war sooner and thus have saved many lives. To try to understand this we must look both at the people's and government's point of view. Just after war broke out in Europe, President Roosevelt hurriedly called his cabinet and military advisors together. There it was agreed that the United states stay neutral in these affairs. One of the reasons given was that unless America was directly threatened they had no reason to be involved. This reason was a valid one because it was the American policy to stay neutral in any affairs not having to with them unless American soil was threatened directly. Thus the provisional neutrality act passed the senate by seventy-nine votes to two in 1935. On August 31, Roosevelt signed it into law. In 1936 the law was renewed, and in 1937 a ?comprehensive and permanent? neutrality act was passed (Overy 259). The desire to avoid ?foreign entanglements? of all kinds had been an American foreign policy for more than a century. A very real ?geographical Isolation? permitted the United States to ?fill up the empty lands of North America free from the threat of foreign conflict?(Churchill 563). Even if Roosevelt had wanted to do more in this European crisis (which he did not), there was a factor too often ignored by critics of American policy-American military weakness. When asked to evaluate how many troops were available if and when the United States would get involved, the army could only gather a mere one hundred thousand, when the French, Russian and Japanese armies numbered in millions. Its weapons dated from the first World War and were no match compared to the new artillery that Germany and its allies had. ?American soldiers were more at home with the horse than with the tank? (Overy 273). The air force was just as bad if not worse. In September 1939 the Air Corps had only 800 combat aircrafts again compared with Germany's 3600 and Russia's 10,000 . American military Aviation (AMA) in 1938 was able to produce only 1,800, 300 less than Germany, and 1,400 less than Japan. Major Eisenhower, who was later Supreme commander of the Allied forces in the second World War, complained that America was left with ?only a shell of military establishment? (Chapman 234 ). As was evident to Roosevelt the United states military was in no way prepared to enter this European crisis. Another aspect that we have to consider is the people's views and thought's regarding the United States going to war. After all let us not forget that the American government is there ?for the people and by the people? and therefore the people's view did play a major role in this declaration of Neutrality. In one of Roosevelt's fireside chats he said ?We shun political commitments which might entangle us In foreign wars...If we face the choice of profits or peace-this nation must answer, the nation will answer ?we choose peace' ?,in which they did. A poll taken in 1939 revealed that ninety-four per cent of the citizens did not want the united states to enter the war. The shock of World War one had still not left ,and entering a new war, they felt, would be foolish. In the early stages of the war American Ambassador to London was quoted saying ?It's the end of the world, the end of everything? ( Overy 261). As Richard Overy notes in The Road To War, this growing ?estrangement? from Europe was not mere selfishness. They were the values expressed by secretary of state, Cordel Hull: ?a

Race Ethnicity and The American Dream
Race Ethnicity and The American Dream Free Online Research Papers This semester I have taken a class at the University called Race, Ethnicity and American Dream. This class talked a lot about stereotyping in American Society, and made the students fully aware of the issues that are currently going on in society. Here, I am about to tell you the three most important things I learned throughout the semester and hopefully you can pass this along to whomever you wish. First and foremost, I learned that race is determined by several different things such as: blood, genes, parents, appearance/skin color, and your nationality. I found this extremely significant because not many people in society know exactly how race is determined. They just hear the concept almost every day and just think of it as the word race, but instead, in our class we learned exactly how your own race is determined. The next important thing I learned in class this semester is the talk about white privilege, and how whites are the hierarchy in society. White privilege makes whites feel one of three things. First, it makes white people feel comfortable, that the world was designed for them. Secondly, it makes white people normal. They donââ¬â¢t have to describe themselves as white, unlike every other nationality. Lastly, it equates whites with positive attributes, which entitles beauty, wealth, ability, and even intelligence. White privilege is all about a system of advantages that no other ethnicity can have. The last most important thing I learned in class this semester was the first death penalty that was given out in Texas to white men for killing a different race, occurred recently in 1998. A group of three white men were driving and happened to see an African-American standing outside when they decided to go up to him and beat him to death, for no apparent reason. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that after he was knocked unconscious, but still alive, the white men decided to tie him to their truck and drag him for 3 miles until his body disintegrated. I bet you didnââ¬â¢t know that, did you? The reason that why you didnââ¬â¢t know, is because the media could care less about an African-American getting beat up to death. However, what do you think would happen if it were the opposite way? If three black men were to kill a white man? I certainly believe it would be all over the news, and still talked about in classrooms all over the nation today. The problem is, we still live in a racist society and somehow, this needs to change. Itââ¬â¢s not fair to Races other then white who get singled out for no apparent reason. Itââ¬â¢s just not fair. Something needs to change now, or the world will never be unified as one.
